The Wash is one of the largest estuaries in Britain. Four Rivers make their way into this vast expanse of mudflats. The rivers Ouse, Witham, Welland and Nene empty their water into this area of ornithological importance.

Due to the lack of disturbance on these extensive flats, combined with plenty of feeding areas, the Wash attracts many species of over wintering migatory wildfowl.Because of this importance the Wash is designated a Site of Scientific Interest, (SSSI.) Special Protection Area. (SPA.)and also a Ramsar site.

The Wash has for generation on generation been a traditional focal point for foreshore fowling. Along with fishing, families, during the early part of the last century relied on this natural harvest to survive and earn their livings.

In modern times leading up to to date, wildfowling has become a legitimate recreation. A vast number of people enjoy this pastime, notable past Wildfowlers have been Sir Peter Scott, the actor film star James Robertson Justice. , and also the legendary Wild Goose Man, Kenzie Thorpe.

Out on these vast mudflats the Pinkfooted Geese overwinter in their thousands. Peak counts can number up to 20  thousand of these magnificent birds. Flighting out at Dawn and Dusk , back and forth to their favoured feeding grounds.The marshes also attract many Widgeon, Situated on the East Coast of England, is one of the largest estuaries in Britain.
